Knights, Black Hawks signed letters of intent to play collegiate sports
Higley Unified School District students continue to make strides in academics and athletics, with more than 30 student-athletes from Higley and Williams Field High Schools signing letters of intent to play sports at colleges and universities across the United States.
On Wednesday, Black Hawks announced their plans during a family- and student-focused event on campus. The students’ will put on college jerseys and caps in schools from Arizona to Oklahoma and beyond.
More than half a dozen football players will put on a college jersey next year, including Jadon Pearson, who signed with the U.S. Air Force Academy and Noa Pola-Gates, who signed with the University of Nebraska.
“My love for the game of football is what really got me recruited,” said Pearson. At the Air Force Academy, he will be able to be a two-sport athlete: football and track.
Twins Tava and Tianna Boone are excited about their new adventure at Eastern New Mexico University, where they will play softball together. Tianna plans to study criminal justice while Tava plans to study child psychology.
“We chose Eastern New Mexico because we felt right at home,” Tianna Boone said. “We’re only nine hours away from home so we’re not too far.”
“And we get to play together,” Tava Boon jumped in.
Ryan Colbert will compete in track and field at William-Jewel College in Liberty, Mo., next year.
“I chose William-Jewell because of the small class sizes. They offer both of my majors and they’re in a very competitive division,” he said. He will study psychological sciences and history with a minor in religion, he said.
At Higley High, student-athletes participated in the celebration on Wednesday in front of peers and family. It was the second celebration on campus, with three student-athletes announcing their plans at an early signing event. Baseball players took the lead on Feb. 6, with four signing to play at schools across the U.S., including Cade Suddreth going to Penn State and Robert “Bobby” Peterson heading to Cornell College.
Students were all excited about their choices.
“I am so excited to go to Benjamin State. All the coaching staff out there just really drew me to there and they have my major, which is big choice in why I chose to go there,” said Dalyn Enderle, who plans to study sports management while playing football.
“I’m going to Mesa because I really like the coach and the nursing program and it’s close to home,” said Knights soccer player Hailey Gilliam, who will attend Mesa Community College in the fall.
“I’m really excited to go because I’m going to probably be the No. 2 pitcher and I’m going to have a lot of fun and I have family there and it’s going to be a really good experience for me,” said Mason Gehling, who will attend Buena Vista University in Iowa. He plans to study information technology/cyber security.
Congratulations to all the Higley Unified School District seniors for reaching their goals to play college sports.
