HUSD Drill team wins Desert Talon meet


The Higley Unified School District Air Force Jr. ROTC Drill Team earned the Grand Champion title this month in its first drill meet of the year.

The 11-member team took the Grand Champion award at the Dec. 1 Desert Talon Drill Meet by earning top three honors in eight of nine event categories. The event included 14 teams from across the Phoenix region. The team placed in the following categories:

1st Place:
Armed Inspection
Unarmed Inspection

2nd Place:
Armed Regulation Drill
Varsity Color Guard
Challenge Color Guard
Unarmed Exhibition
Armed Exhibition
3rd Place:
4-Man Armed Exhibition
Armed Drill Dow

In addition, Cadet Christian Nichols placed third out of 80 cadets in the individual, armed drill down competition.  This represents the first time in several years a Drill Knight placed in an individual drill down event.

The combined Higley and Williams Field High Schools program is led by SMSgt. Danny Alltop and Col. D. Scott Vaughn.

“I appreciate both of them for their hard work and dedication to our students,” said Higley High Principal Nancy Diab. “Our students do an awesome job representing the program and their school.”
