MyKayla Skinner, a graduate from Higley High School’s Class of 2015, became an Olympic medalist after winning silver in the women’s vault competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
This is Skinner’s first Olympic medal, after scoring an average of 14.916 on her two Cheng and Amanar vaults. Only Rebeca Andrade of Brazil finished with a higher average score, which was a 15.083 and won her the gold.
Skinner is only the fifth American to medal on vault. According to ESPN, Skinner said her gymnastics career is officially over and at this time, she’s achieved everything she ever wanted.
"This seriously means so much… Pushing for my goals and dreams to make it to the Olympics has been such an honor. And now, to even be in for the vault final and to win a silver medal, that's icing on the cake for me. Seriously, so unreal."
