The Cortina Elementary National Elementary Honor Society inducted twenty-two new members on Thursday, December 13th. The Cortina chapter has sixty 4th, 5th, and 6th grade members in total. During the induction ceremony, they celebrated their many acts of service over the past year.
Cortina’s NEHS members have been very busy! They started with a sock drive in February, collecting over 2,000 pairs of socks to donate to Save the Family and the HUSD students in need program. Then they held a toilet paper drive, donating over 200 rolls of toilet paper to Gather Humanity. Members have also participated in two campus cleanups, created a morning greeters program on campus, started a weekly Friday dance party, and participated in various Fuel Up to Play 60 activities. These activities have included a food waste reduction effort and the first annual Turkey Trot, contributing to the STUCO canned food drive. Members also gave up a Saturday morning to hold a Supermarket Stakeout, and they collected 338 nonperishable food items to add to the food drive as well. The NEHS members’ most recent activity was a blanket drive, donating 149 blankets to the House of Refuge. In January, Cortina’s NEHS will join efforts with the Cortina Kindness Committee to host the first Color the World with Kindness ice cream social. These students set an amazing example of collaboration, responsibility, and the value of service.
