  • Governing Board unanimously approves Superintendent contract extension

The Higley Unified School District Governing Board voted unanimously June 7 to approve a two-year extension to Superintendent Mike Thomason’s contract. Dr. Thomason began as superintendent in July 2015 with a three-year contract that was scheduled to expire June 30, 2018. With the decision, Superintendent Thomason’s contract will continue through June 30, 2020.

“I am excited to continue serving the students, staff, teachers and families of our Higley schools. We have an incredible community that is committed to the educational future of its youth,” Thomason said. “I want to thank the board for this opportunity and am ready to see all that can be achieved here in the Higley Unified School District, especially as we roll out our new strategic plan.”

  • AVID is coming to Higley High School!!!

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities. Established more than 35 years ago with one teacher in one classroom, AVID today impacts nearly 1.5 million students in 46 states and 16 other countries/territories.

AVID brings research‐based strategies and curriculum to educational institutions in elementary, secondary, and higher education. The AVID System annually provides 60,000+ educators with training and methodologies that develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas throughout the entire campus, in what we call Schoolwide AVID.

    AVID:

Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success

Provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships

Creates a positive peer group for students

Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

    AVID STUDENT PROFILE:

AVID targets students in the academic middle–B, C, and even D students (GPA 2.5-3.5)–with the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum, but are falling short of their potential. We will provide the support needed to ensure their success in rigorous coursework.

AVID places these students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in the most rigorous courses that are appropriate for them, such as Honors and Advanced Placement®. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality.

If your incoming freshman is interested in the program please fill out the AVID application and email it to Nancy.Diab@husd.org by July 1, 2017.
