students drop off food donations for the "Stuff the Bus" food drive

The National Honor Society at Williams Field High School in Higley Unified School District has once again demonstrated the power of student-led service. During its annual “Stuff the Bus” Food Drive, students collected nonperishable items for five weeks, to help fight hunger in the East Valley.

With an ambitious goal of 12,000 pounds, the community exceeded expectations by donating an astounding 14,848 pounds of food. The United Food Bank confirmed that this delivery was the largest single-day donation of the year, and a testament to the strength of the Higley community’s commitment to service.

“This is always our single biggest donation from any school,” said United Food Bank representative Maddie Mittelstaedt. “We are so grateful to partner with them every year.”

Mittelstaedt says this time of year is critical for the food bank to replenish donations. National Honor Society advisor Megan Spitler understands the opportunity to serve.

“I’m just very excited to be able to restock the United Food Bank after they distributed so much food the last couple of weeks for Thanksgiving and other events,” she said.

The food was delivered on Tuesday, November 25, at the United Food Bank Volunteer Center in Mesa, where students proudly celebrated their achievement. The event highlighted the district’s #HigleyHelps initiative, which encourages students to collaborate with nonprofit partners on service-learning projects that make a meaningful impact.
