Higley Unified School District is out for summer, but that doesn’t mean the buildings are quiet or empty. All summer long, 12-month staff have jobs to do, and less than two months to complete everything from new curriculum distribution, to repair and maintenance projects, to new teacher training. 

In the district warehouse, employees are hard at work, receiving, taking inventory and distributing tens of thousands of curriculum books, office and custodial supplies, and processing orders through their print shop.  

On campuses, maintenance and operations workers are completing necessary projects; summer being their busiest time of year. They’re refinishing flooring at Chaparral Elementary, painting at three different schools, resurfacing Higley High tennis courts, repairing lighting and drywall, installing new fire lanes at Coronado and San Tan Elementaries, and replacing HVAC systems. 

These projects are scheduled strategically to work around Summer Intersession and other Community Education programs that run during the break, providing opportunities for students to create, play, explore, and continue learning. Dozens of enrichment programs, athletic camps, and classes are available during the summer on HUSD campuses. This also includes Kinder Kickstart, the district’s Kindergarten preparation program for incoming students.  

While summer programs and maintenance projects are underway, the District Office is also operating as usual. Educational Services employees are preparing teacher training and professional development plans to implement when teachers return in mid-July. New teachers will onboard with several days of training and introduction before preparing their classrooms. Other departments including Human Resources, Finance, Special Education, and Public Information continue working to manage ongoing projects and processes, and prepare for the next year. 

It takes a lot to run a successful school district, and HUSD has hundreds of dedicated employees working behind-the-scenes with one goal: to welcome nearly 12,000 students to Higley Schools on July 23rd and prepare learners for limitless opportunities.
