Administrators pose next to a banner that reads A+ School of Excellence

Higley Unified School District is proud to announce that Cooley Middle School and Cortina Elementary School have each been named an A+ School of Excellence® by the Arizona Educational Foundation® (AEF), the highest state-level honor awarded to public schools in Arizona.

The A+ School of Excellence® distinction recognizes schools that demonstrate outstanding leadership, high-quality instruction, rigorous academic programs, strong family and community engagement, and a commitment to a student-centered learning environment. Hundreds of Arizona schools apply each year, with only a select group earning this prestigious title.

Schools selected for this honor complete an extensive evaluation process, including a detailed written application, interviews, and on-site visits conducted by AEF judges. Designations remain valid for four years, during which honorees may support AEF initiatives and professional learning opportunities statewide.

“It doesn’t only benefit those who are recognized,” said Kim Graham, AEF Chief Executive Officer. “The application process itself is a useful self-assessment tool for schools. It provides a framework to analyze what they’re doing and how they can improve. AEF then facilitates learning and mentorship opportunities, so schools have tangible paths to progress. In that way, every school benefits and everyone wins.”

Cooley principal Chad Cantrell acknowledged the team effort behind the recognition.

“We are extremely proud to earn this recognition as the judges are educators from around the state of Arizona who have already earned the A+ School of Excellence designation and see Cooley for the exceptional school that it is,” he said. “Thank you again to our Cooley community for your support on this journey from our application to our visit, and now in celebrating our success!”

Cortina Elementary principal Kelly Papke said the recognition is a mark of distinction for schools in Arizona.

This special recognition was made possible through the collective efforts of our entire school community,” said Papke. “It truly reflects the dedication, teamwork, heart, and commitment shown by our students, staff, and parents. I am genuinely proud of what we accomplished together!”

Cooley Middle School and Cortina Elementary School are both in the Higley Unified School District, which now has a total of four schools with the A+ School of Excellence® designation. Every campus in HUSD is also rated “A” by the Arizona State Board of Education. To learn more about these schools, visit husd.org.
