students and staff pose for a photo at the Leader in Me Symposium

Higley Schools, Ariz.- Students and staff from Chaparral Elementary proudly represented their school at the 2026 Leader in Me Symposium held in downtown Phoenix. The annual event brings together educators and student leaders from across the nation to celebrate leadership, personal growth, and school-wide empowerment strategies based on Franklin Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.

Chaparral Elementary is one of two official Lighthouse Certified Leader in Me schools in the Higley Unified School District, known for fostering a culture of leadership and whole-child development. San Tan Elementary School is also Lighthouse Certified, a designation that recognizes their programs as flagships among the organization.

At the Symposium, six 5th‑grade student volunteers welcomed and assisted more than 500 attendees during registration, and introduced keynote speakers Muriel Summers and David Hatch, authors highlighted at this year’s event.

In a standout moment, one student prepared and delivered a personal speech sharing how the Leader in Me framework has positively impacted her life, and a powerful reflection of Chaparral’s commitment to student voice and authentic leadership opportunities.

Congratulations to the student volunteers for stepping up with confidence, and heartfelt thanks to Miss Guzman for creating meaningful opportunities that allow students to shine beyond the classroom. Moments like these exemplify Higley Unified School District’s mission to prepare learners for limitless opportunities.
