ASU Society of Women Engineers Inspires Future Engineers at Higley High

Higley High School recently welcomed representatives from Arizona State University (ASU) Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for an inspiring panel and roundtable discussion aimed at empowering future engineers. The event featured six ASU student panelists from a variety of engineering disciplines and academic levels, each sharing their unique journeys through college, internships, research opportunities, and campus involvement.

The format was intentionally informal and conversational, allowing Higley students to engage in meaningful Q&A sessions. The goal was to create a space where students could ask candid questions about college life, career paths, and the realities of pursuing engineering.

Zoe Amtsfield, K-12 Outreach Director for ASU’s SWE Chapter, emphasized the importance of connection and mentorship.

“Above all, if they can get one of their questions answered, that’s my goal,” she said. “I know when I was in high school, I had a lot of questions, and I still do, just about the future and what it might look like. College is very much an unknown variable, especially when you’re in high school. I’m hoping this serves as a mentor experience in more ways than just academically.”

The event also highlighted the impact of Higley High School’s own Career and Technical Education (CTE) Engineering program, which helps students explore STEM fields and build foundational skills. Abbie Tremp, a 2023 HHS graduate and current ASU Mechanical Engineering student, reflected on her experience: “I was in the Engineering program and Robotics at Higley High School. I think the Robotics program really helped me understand what engineering was.”

With robust CTE programs across Higley Unified School District, students are empowered to discover their passions, build essential skills, and prepare for Limitless Opportunities in college, careers, and beyond.
