It’s time to start planning for the 2026-2027 school year and make sure you are prepared. Course selection is more than just filling out a schedule. It is about selecting classes that support your goals and interests. Higley Unified School District’s Counseling Program Coordinator helped create this step-by-step checklist to help you make informed decisions:

1. Review Your Graduation Requirements

Meet with your counselor regularly. Counselors conduct credit checks throughout the year to ensure you are on track.

  • Understand which requirements you have already met and which ones you still need, such as English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and electives.

  • Missing a required credit can delay graduation, so double-check your progress early.

2. Consider Your Postsecondary Goals

Whether you are thinking about college, entering the workforce, joining the military, or pursuing a trade, your class choices matter. Look into classes that align with your postsecondary goals.

3. Explore Your Interests and Strengths

Ask yourself: What subjects do I enjoy? Where do I excel?

  • Use electives to discover new passions or deepen existing ones.

  • CTE pathways can lead to certifications and real-world experience before graduation.

4. Use Major Clarity for Career Exploration

Major Clarity is the district’s hands-on career exploration platform for students, to help them with college and career planning that can be accessed at any point.

What you can do:

  • Take a career interest survey to see what fields match your personality.

  • Watch professional interviews to learn about different careers.

  • Try interactive activities that simulate day-to-day tasks in various jobs.

Connect courses to careers. See how your class choices align with your future goals.

5. Balance Your Schedule

Challenge yourself but do not overload your schedule. A balanced schedule helps you succeed academically and maintain well-being. Ensure you meet graduation requirements while exploring interests.

6. Ask for Advice

Reach out to your counselor, teachers, and family members. Your counselor can help you understand graduation requirements and available course options. Teachers and family members can share valuable perspectives on your strengths and interests, which can guide you toward choices that fit your goals.

Choosing the right course schedule is one of the most important steps you can take to prepare for your future. The classes you select now will help you meet graduation requirements, build skills, and open doors to Limitless Opportunities.
