HUSD Takes Proactive Approach to Ensure Students Thrive Academically and Emotionally
To increase awareness of mental health challenges among young people, Higley Unified School District has implemented a Healthy Higley Wellness Initiative. This initiative is designed to provide community members in the Gilbert area with the resources needed to ensure students thrive academically and emotionally.
As part of Higley Unified School District's updated strategic plan, maximizing each student's academic and social-emotional growth is of the utmost importance.
HUSD has taken a proactive approach to ensure the District is providing resources to support the social-emotional growth of each student and the development of positive student behavior. To do so, HUSD has developed and implemented a K-12 comprehensive counseling program, with additional counselors available to all students. This increase in counselors includes the addition of one District led counselor to support the K-12 counselor group, three counselors to service all nine elementary schools, and a District behavior coach. This model enhances the ability for all students to fully utilize all the opportunities that are available to them related to emotional well-being.
The District has also improved its process of training employees, families, and students on social-emotional growth. This year's focus is resiliency, which includes proactive and preventative ways to overcome obstacles and develop positive life skills.
Additionally, the District is focusing on suicide awareness and drug prevention. One of the strategies the District is using to increase suicide awareness is through additional training for all school site employees. HUSD is currently developing and refining its process associated with Suicide Risk Management, which includes training K-12 employees with step-by-step guidelines to better help them observe concerning behavior and respond appropriately. Administrators have already received additional training on this process earlier this school year, but all K-12 employees will be trained with these additional steps starting in December 2022.
Updated Migitgation Strategy
We will resume school following winter break on Monday, January 3, 2022. Beginning Tuesday, January 4, 2022, we will once again allow the following types of activities to resume at Gateway Pointe Elementary:
- All-school assemblies
- Volunteers on campus to work with students and assist teachers
- Parents will be allowed to come and eat lunch with their student(s)
- Field trips in alignment with district policies/procedures
While restricting recess before school is no longer a required district mitigation strategy, at Gateway Pointe our teachers and staff are using this time before school to work individually with students to provide extra academic support and homework help. Teachers are also utilizing this valuable time to provide enrichment opportunities. In addition, we have seen an unprecedented number of students taking advantage of the breakfast program.
We will continue to work closely with the Maricopa County Health Department and would like to remind everyone of the importance of staying home when you are not feeling well – which includes participating in activities mentioned above as a student, parent, or volunteer. Please stay home if you:
- are not well and are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms, or
- are awaiting COVID-19 test results, or
- have received a positive COVID-19 test result, or
- have someone in your household who has tested positive for COVID-19
Again, thank you for continuing to follow our exclusion guidelines when your child/children are not feeling well. As the year progresses, we will continue to monitor our practices given the health situation on our campus and within our community.
ParentVue is the Higley Unified School District portal to student schedules, student grades and attendance history. It is also used for registration and re-enrollment each year.
Families that need help to access ParentVue, should contact their school offices.
