Centennial Elementary School
As a Visual Arts educator going into my 11th year in the Higley Unified School District, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with your children here at Centennial Elementary School. At Centennial, we build a collaborative community of student leaders, supportive families, and dedicated staff that foster relationships to promote academic achievement, personal growth and school pride. We have been an Excelling School with a Grade A label, and a recipient of the A+ School of Excellence award from the Arizona Educational Foundation during the 2015-2016 school year.
As a flagship school of our district and the state of Arizona, we pride ourselves on bringing a well-rounded experience to our students in and out of the classroom. We have so many creative and artistically talented students at Centennial; everyone has the opportunity to participate in a variety of artistic genres, techniques, theory, media, and history that we build upon year after year making connections to academics in the classroom and the world around us. I hope that your children will enjoy coming to class as much as I will enjoy having them. We are in for another great year!
Ms. Emily Perez
I am a graduate of Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education. I had the opportunity in 2008 to do my student teaching at Fremont Junior High School in the Mesa Public School District where I was the recipient of ASU's College of Education's Student Teacher of the Year award for Secondary Education. ASU is where I discovered and developed my love for Fine Arts education.
For over 15 years I have engaged with students ages 3-18 in such venues as the Phoenix Zoo, The Arizona Museum for Youth (now the IDEA Museum), San Tan Mountain Regional Park, and the City of Tempe. In 2013 I was awarded the Cooley Award by the Town of Gilbert and Mayor Lewis for my significant contributions to a specific Arts program. It has been my honor to bring arts enrichment through Art Masterpiece alongside arts education here to our Cardinal Community.
Last summer, I was selected to go to Hebei, China to participate in the 2018 Global K-12 Education Research Association Summer Camp experience where I taught third and sixth grade Visual Arts in English for the Shijiazhuang Foreign Language Education Group. It was an experience that I will never forget and hope to share with my students over the years. I hope to add Italy to that list during the 2019 Fall Break.
While I have had so many wonderful experiences and memories, my heart is here in Higley at Centennial Elementary. It has been a place that has nutured my career and is supportive of the Fine Arts in education. Art has been my passion since I was small, and I hope to instill a similar appreciation in your children, too!
