•  Dr. Joyce Jamerson, Literacy Coach

Hello! My name is Dr. Joyce Jamerson and I am excited and honored to serve as a Literacy Coach/Specialist at Gateway Pointe Elementary School!

The most efficient way to contact me is through email at joyce.jamerson@husd.org.I will do my best to return messages at my earliest convenience!

A little about my role as the Literacy Coach...
As the Literacy Coach I provide job-embedded professional development for classroom teachers, intervention support for students, assist with literacy assessments, family literacy events, and more!
    What is a literacy coach?
In her book, The Literacy Coach's Survival Guide, (p. 46)
Cathy Toll says that when she meets with teachers for the first time, she asks them:

    When you think about...
the kind of reading and writing you want your students to do,
the kind of literate lives you want your students to have,
the kind of classroom you want to have,
the kind of teaching you want to be able to do,
    what gets in your way?

It is a literacy coach's job to help a teacher to eliminate these roadblocks and create the kind of classroom he or she envisions.

    A little about me...

I was born and raised in Indiana and I moved to Arizona in 2009 with my husband and children. Since moving to Arizona, I have served our community as a literacy specialist in many different ways. I am currently serving as Past-President of the Arizona Reading Association and President of the Ocotillo East Reading Council. I am a National Leadership Literacy Specialist for Scholastic. I also serve at Arizona State University and Grand Canyon University in different academic capacities.

I have been a professional educator since 1997 and my passion and dedication increases year after year. Throughout my career I have served as a classroom teacher, literacy coach, licensed childcare facility owner, university instructor/student teaching supervisor, K-10th grade principal, and educational consultant. As you can see from my work experience, I love working with children and for children! I am committed to being a life-long learner and I am always looking for ways to improve myself professionally and personally.

When I'm not working, I love to spend quality time with my family - playing games, dancing around the house, taking walks, swimming, and traveling (mostly for soccer and basketball tournaments). I always cherish the special moments when I can find a quiet spot to read or write.

I am looking forward to an exciting and successful school year! Please don't hesitate to contact me by email (or phone) if you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, or a desire to help out with family literacy events.
