Welcome to fifth grade! I am a native Virginian, but have lived in Arizona for 28 years. I began my career as a Computer Programmer/Analyst, but returned to school to become a teacher in order to serve a more fulfilling purpose. I decided to follow my heart. I have been at Cortina for twelve years; this will make thirteen. Yes! I was here the very first year that Cortina opened. I love being a tiger! My husband, Emilio, and I have one daughter, Veronica, who just graduated from Northern Arizona University with a degree in Strategic Communication. She will be moving to Florida to take an internship at Disney World in August. We all enjoy hiking and the outdoors.
Fifth grade is an exciting year! It is a big transition year between elementary and middle school. There is so much growth that takes place - not only academically, but physically and emotionally as well. Elementary students walk in the door, and middle schoolers walk out at the end of the year.
I love the fifth-grade curriculum. We study exciting topics such as space, the human body, force and motion, atoms and molecules, the 13 original colonies, the American Revolution, maps, and a wide variety of math topics. I never get tired of exploring these subjects, and I always learn something new (usually from my students)!
I strive to be a facilitator in a stimulating learning environment in order to foster a sense of independence and strong self-esteem in all my students. I am looking forward to meeting each of you.
