Fentanyl
Arizona High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) was established in 1990. Its mission is to facilitate, support, and enhance collaborative drug control efforts among law enforcement agencies and community-based organizations with a common voice and unified strategy and thereby significantly reduce the impact of illegal trafficking and use of drugs throughout Arizona. Higley hosted several information sessions called "One Pill Can Kill" with an expert from HIDTA, with plans to continue to offer the presentation to the community on a regular basis. Parents learn about the newest threats to children, and are informed about the counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl along with the Good Samaritan Law. Also discussed is the lifesaving medication called Naloxone.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid approved for treating severe pain, such as advanced cancer. However, illicitly manufactured fentanyl is on the streets in Arizona and increasing at an alarming rate. These pills are extremely dangerous! DEA data demonstrates that 2 out of every 5 counterfeit pills are laced with enough fentanyl to kill a person. This devastating issue impacts a growing number of families, including our children. For more information on Fentanyl, please click here: Fentanyl Facts
