Higley Unified School District’s commitment to making a difference is making an impact and turning ideas into reality. At HUSD’s Fall Business Partner and Community Breakfast in September attendees engaged in meaningful discussions with PTO members, principals, and local business leaders, all working together to develop initiatives to enrich our schools and surrounding community. Several innovative ideas were shared and brainstormed, including a project that has already been successfully implemented at Cortina Elementary School for Make a Difference Day.

This year, Cortina Elementary chose to expand on a garden project initiated last year, which was a hit with both staff and students. The Rad Dadz built personalized benches and added more planter boxes to the school’s garden area, with the goal of encouraging teachers and students to take learning outdoors and create a more enjoyable and inviting environment for all.

Vice President of the Cortina Elementary PTO Aubrie Bechdel said the project not only beautifies the campus but also instills a sense of pride and responsibility. “We love Make a Difference Day! It feels good to give back to the community that gives so much to our kids. It takes a village, and we are so much stronger as a community when we work together.” She continued, “It really is such a beautiful day, seeing our staff, admin, families, and kids come together to show our love for our school.”

Projects like these would not be possible without the incredible support of dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors. A special thank you goes to the sponsors for Cortina Elementary's Make a Difference Day including Pioneer Co., who donated soil; B&C Tree Service, who provided mulch; and AZ Irrigation & Construction, along with Nations First Financial, who helped with the turf purchase, offering it at cost and including free delivery.

The commitment, time, and resources from both volunteers and sponsors have been instrumental in turning these ideas into reality and making a tangible impact. Their involvement has been key, and we look forward to continuing our work together to build a better future for our students and community.
