Aimees Farm Animal Sanctuary, HTAP

The Higley Transition & Access Program (HTAP) is a comprehensive, one-year program designed for qualified students in special education within the Higley Unified School District (HUSD) who are seeking to gain valuable skills for independent employment.

A key highlight of HTAP is its emphasis on volunteering at diverse job sites, offering students invaluable real-world exposure to various career settings. Since the 2020-2021 school year, HTAP students have partnered with Aimee’s Farm Animal Sanctuary, an organization dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing farm animals in need while fostering a healing environment for differently abled individuals. This partnership, established during the early stages of HTAP’s growth, has become an integral part of the program.

“Aimee was really open to having us come out here. She loves working with people with disabilities and has a special heart for animals with disabilities as well,” shared HTAP teacher Brittany Yanov. Every other Monday, HTAP students dedicate their time and talents to meaningful activities at the sanctuary.

At Aimee’s Farm, students engage in essential tasks such as caring for animals, organizing and cleaning spaces, and managing feeding routines. Beyond these responsibilities, they develop critical life skills, including teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving. Yanov highlights the unique benefits of the farm setting, saying, “They’re learning teamwork and problem-solving—because, let’s face it, a farm comes with its fair share of challenges—and basic work skills.” These experiences not only prepare students for future employment but also equip them to navigate everyday challenges with confidence and resilience.

HUSD takes great pride in supporting the growth and success of its special education students through innovative programs like HTAP. This initiative exemplifies the district’s commitment to creating inclusive opportunities that empower all students to reach their full potential and build brighter futures.
