HUSD News Stories
Higley Unified School District (HUSD) hosted its annual Chinese New Year Celebration at Coronado Elementary School, bringing together students, families, and community members for a night filled with cultural appreciation and excitement. This special event featured a variety of engaging activities, including performances, interactive booths, fun-filled games, and creative hands-on crafts.
A standout moment of the evening was the impressive showcase by students in the Mandarin Dual Language Immersion Program from Cooley Early Childhood Development Center, Coronado Elementary School, Cooley Middle School, and Williams Field High School. These talented students demonstrated their growing language skills and deepening cultural knowledge through traditional dances, musical performances, and cultural storytelling.
Jeff Armstrong, HUSD’s Executive Director of Elementary Education, praised the students’ incredible progress, stating:
"The growth of our Mandarin Dual Language Immersion students is truly remarkable. Their language skills and cultural understanding continue to shine through in every aspect of their performances."
The event reflected the dedication of both students and educators in embracing this immersive learning experience.
Students can begin their journey in the program as early as preschool at the Cooley Early Childhood Development Center, continue through Coronado Elementary for K-6th grade, transition to Cooley Middle School for 7th-8th grade, and finally attend Williams Field High School, where they can take a proficiency test to determine course placement for 9th-12th grade.
