    School Closure Update

    Dear Higley Families:

As you may have heard today, the Governor and the Arizona Department of Education announced that the school closure would extend through the remainder of the school year.  While this is called a "school closure" we are by no means "closed". We are providing remote learning opportunities so that all students can successfully complete their school year.

Today remote learning began, and I am so proud of the work put forth by our teachers as they start teaching remotely. They have put in countless hours over the last few days to create meaningful opportunities for students in a different format. I want to give a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of them as they will continue to work very hard to embrace this new challenge. It is important to know that this will be a transition for all of us as we work together to create new ways to optimize instruction for students and families alike.

Please visit our remote learning support webpage for general support information and resources that we will continue to add to over the next several weeks.

We understand there is a lot on your plate as a parent. Nothing is more important right now than the mental, emotional and physical health of you and yours. We know many of you are trying to juggle work-at-home, as well as remote learning activities for your children. We will all need to be flexible and continue to communicate with each other as needs and questions arise. Please reach out directly to your child’s teacher or principal with specific questions or concerns as we navigate this remote learning endeavor together.

We know there are questions you may have that we don’t have answers for at this time. Please know we will continue to keep you informed regarding specific end-of-the-year activities as we gain more information and official guidance. Thank you for your patience as we coordinate these details with forthcoming state guidance. We will share information as soon as we are able to do so.

    Athletic Activities Cancelled

With the state's decision to close schools for the rest of the year, the Arizona Interscholastic Athletics Association announced the cancellation of the AIA spring season and championships.

    School Closure Update

    Dear Higley Families:

Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Education announced Friday a two-week extension of school closures, now through April 10.

I know this is an unusual time for our students and staff. We will work to keep you informed as we navigate the next few weeks together.

Higley Unified School District has created a collection of educational materials and activities to support our students’ ongoing learning and enrichment during this school closure through next week. While these things are optional, we highly recommend these activities and resources to keep children engaged in learning. These are not required and will not count toward any credit or grades. Your school will be in touch with additional information.

Early next week, my leadership team and I will continue developing longer term remote learning opportunities for students. We will communicate more information next week through e-mail and on the District website.

In addition, the Governor requested meal services continue and the expansion of childcare opportunities for those parents who must report to work.

Also, President Trump announced Friday that the U.S Department of Education will not require standardized testing for the current year for all students, elementary through high school. With that, we anticipate students will not be required to take the AzMERIT at all grade levels and high school students will not be required to take the ACT this year. We will share additional information as it is communicated.

We will provide an update daily by 5 p.m. Please download the Higley App for the latest information if you haven’t already. It is available in your favorite App store.

Governor Closes Arizona Schools through March 27

    Dear HUSD Staff and Families,

I want you to know that my team and I have been monitoring the COVID-19 developments and have been in daily communication over the past week.

On Sunday, March 15, the Governor and the Arizona Department of Education announced a statewide two-week school closure, beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27, 2020. We are following the directions of the State, and will continue to monitor our own situation to determine the best course of action for our District beyond March 27.

Last week, HUSD took a proactive lead to have any staff who could work from home do so. This will continue through March 27, 2020.

Rest assured that my team will continue to meet over these upcoming weeks to design plans to serve our students, staff, and community.

While there may be recommendations beyond March 27, it is my commitment to you that we will make decisions that best serve our students, staff, and community.

Please visit our COVID-19 website where there is valuable information on the disease and how to cope with and plan for this pandemic.

We will post updates daily no later than 5:00 PM.

    Information for school communities

    Prevention:

    • At this time HUSD schools are continuing to follow the established practices, procedures and policies of the district and the Arizona Department of Health.
    • Fever: Please keep your child home if they have a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher. They may return to school after being fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.
    • Vomiting and/or Diarrhea: Please keep your child home until symptom free for at least 24 hours. The child must be able to consume his/her regular diet without any problem.
    • Any changes to those would be at the direction from an outside agency such as the CDC and/or Arizona Department of Health.
    • Disinfecting practices in the schools are being given additional attention.

Preparation for Possible Changes for Schools:

    • While the District does have alternate plans outlined should the school day be impacted, these plans are fluid depending on the level of impact and when the impact would occur. Customizing the plan will be crucial at the time of implementation.
    • Field trips and extra-curricular activities are being reviewed on an on-going individual basis.
    • Higley will follow direction set forth by Maricopa County Health Department and the CDC in determining any need for a change in school practices and/or a school closure.
    • In following the recommendations of the CDC, we encourage families to prepare steps for childcare needs should your child become ill and/or a school day is interrupted or closed.
