    Course Description:

    This course is designed to introduce the skills, strategies and vocabulary involved in algebraic problem solving.  It includes algebra concepts, inductive and deductive reasoning, functions, probability, measurement, discrete math, number theory and connections to Geometry.  This course prepares students for more advanced study of math and science.

    Rules and Expectations:

    Respect each other at all times.

    Come to class prepared (notebook and pencil/pen) ready to learn.
    7 P’s of Higley High School (Prompt, Prepared, Polite, Positive Mental Attitude, Participate, Produce, and Pride).
    No bathroom breaks during class activities.
    No food or drink in the classroom except water.
    Students will follow the procedures and guidelines of the student handbook.


    Grading Policy:

    Daily work (worth 30% of final grade):

          Homework assignments 15%
          Class work 15%
    Assessments (worth 50% of final grade):

          Unit Tests & Projects 40%
          Quizzes 10%

    Final (worth up to 20%):

         Mid-semester exam 10%
         Semester exam 10%

    Grading scale: 100-90% = A, 89-80% = B,  79-70% = C,  69-60% = D,  Below 60% = F

    Grades and homework assignments are available through Blackboard. If an outside homework calendar is used for this course, open this course within Blackboard and use the homework link button.

    Homework, Quizzes, and Tests:Success will be met in this class by completing daily class work and homework. Homework is due the class day after the assignment is given unless otherwise specified. It is important for your success in this class that you do all of your work without copying or cheating. All assignments must have the justifying steps and work in order to receive credit. Failure to show work will result in a zero on homework and substantial grade reduction on quizzes and tests. Show all of your work! If you are absent it is your responsibility to make up any missed assignments. Late assignments will only be accepted for excused absences. You have the number of days you were absent to make up the missed work. Field trips do not work this way – you are responsible for getting your work before you’re gone, and the due date is not extended.     

    Quizzes will be given at least once a week. The use of notes and homework will be allowed on quizzes.

    Tests will be given at the end of every unit.  Notes and homework will not be allowed.
     

    Make-up Tests/Retakes/Quizzes:
    If you miss the review for a chapter test, you will be expected to take the test as scheduled. The review does not contain any new material, so excuses are not accepted.
    Make-up for tests/quizzes is mandatory and it is your responsibility to schedule. 

    Make-ups will be given only for excused absences and must be scheduled with me to be taken after school.  Class time will not be allowed for make-up quizzes or tests.  Make-ups not scheduled and taken within one week of the excused absence will result in a grade of 0. 
    Test retakes will be allowed only if all homework for the unit was completed prior to the first attempt at the test.
    To retake a test, you must first correct all problems missed on the original test by writing the original problem on a separate sheet of paper and working the problem correctly, showing all steps.  Retakes will not be given if corrections are done over original work on the test.            

    Academic honesty is expected of all students.  Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to: communication with other students during a test, using notes on test, using a cell phone while testing,  or  using someone else’s notes during a quiz.  Any behavior that affects the integrity of the test or quiz will result in a grade of 0. In addition to the policies and procedures stated above, all school policies and the code of conduct will be enforced.

    Behavior Policy:Respect for teachers, students, the learning process, and our campus is expected at all times.
    All electronics, which include cell phones and I-pods, are prohibited during class. If they are in use or visible, they will be confiscated and given to administration for parent pick up.  All school rules outlined in the student handbook as they pertain to electronics, dress code, food and drink, language, and behavior will be strongly enforced in this class.

    Tardy Policy:Tardy students are a disruption to the learning process. Bell-work will be given regularly during the first 1 or 2 minutes of class.  Students who are late will lose credit for missed bell-work.  Students who are late will also need to sign a tardy slip documenting their reason for being.  On the third tardy, a parent/student Tardy Contract will be established. After the 3rd tardy, students will serve detention for each tardy. On the 6th tardy, students will receive an office referral. Students who are more than 10 minutes late will be marked absent.
