    Course Overview:  Algebra 1 students will use the language of algebra including its vocabulary, symbols, and reasoning to solve problems, describe relationships and patterns, and apply algebra to represent real-life situations. Using algebraic, numerical, and graphical representations, students will use critical and creative thinking to solve problems and acquire the algebraic foundation and skills necessary for Geometry and Algebra 2.

    Course Outline:  Each Unit of Study may routinely include the following assessments:

    Required Materials:

    ·      A spiral notebook for Algebra (2 notebooks, 1 per semester)

    ·      Pencils/Eraser (All work must be completed in pencil).

    ·      Colored Pen for correcting.

    ·      A scientific calculator (required)

    ·      TI- 84 Graphing Calculator (suggested, but not required)



    Student progress during the course will be measured by the following elements:

    Formative Assessments (Assessments for learning)

    The most common type of formative assessment is practice work (at home or in-class).  Practice work is reviewed (debriefed) daily, giving students immediate feedback about their knowledge and an opportunity to improve their understanding by asking clarifying questions before a summative assessment. Formative assessments may be given to allow students to practice test-taking skills and to formalize their understanding of unit concepts and skills.  These formative assessments may or may not be scored, but will always provide students with immediate feedback about what they know and can do at that moment in time.  Students will use the information/data provided through formative assessments to guide future studies and practice as they work toward mastery of the concepts and skills of this class. Students are expected to check their understanding of unit learning goals daily through a student self-reflection sheet provided at the beginning of each unit of study. 

    Summative Assessments (Assessments of learning)

    Summative assessments – such as a quizzes and tests – will be given during the study of a unit’s concepts and skills and will be used to shape instruction during the unit.  An end-of-unit summative assessment will be given for each unit of study and will represent all of the learning goals within that unit.  Summative assessments may include items that are multiple-choice, free-response, short writing response, or any combination of these. 

    Practice Work:  (Method of learning)

    Homework/ Classwork/ Homework Quizzes/ Notebook Checks

    The practice work category includes classwork, homework, and group work done in class. The primary purpose of practice-work in mathematics is to enhance classroom learning.  Assigned practice work will be completed either in the classroom or at home in a timely manner.  Both the student and the teacher use practice work to evaluate the learning process.  Practice work also provides the student the opportunities to:

    • Refine their skills through practice

    • Check for understanding (includes checking answers in the back of the textbook or online)

    • Develop independent learning skills, including the use of resources such as the textbook and class notes

    • Apply and investigate learned concepts in new contexts and preview new content

    Please keep in mind that practice work goes beyond the solving of assigned problems.  For practice work to be an effective part of the learning process, it consists not only of written work but also of reflection by the student on his or her level of understanding.

    While each classroom provides a unique learning experience, the following practice-work standards exists for all mathematics courses:

    • Practice work is assigned weekly and due on Thursday evening. 

    • Students should typically expect to invest 15-30 focused minutes per night.  The required time varies by both student and topic.

    • The quality of work should provide sufficient detail to convey the problem-solving process to other students and to the teacher.

    • Students are expected to follow up on practice work difficulties with available resources, including the textbook, class notes, and tutoring.

    Grade Calculation:

    Any missed assessments or assignments will be entered as a zero until the item is made up. Missed assessments will be made up with the teacher before or after school immediately upon return to school, if there hasn’t been prior communication. Please be aware that missing work may temporarily skew the grade for eligibility checks!  If a student misses the review day before a test, he or she is still expected to take the test. If they missed new material, they get a day to make up the material. If there is long-term project or assignment due, the due date does not move back if a student misses a day or two during the project time frame. Unusual cases will be handled individually.

    As we progress through the semester, grades are weighted in the following manner:

    [Practice Work - 10%; Quizzes – 20%; Tests - 50%]: 80%      Final: 20%

    Practice work and summative assessments will account for 80% of the semester grade. Of that 80%, 10% will be the result of all practice work, and the remaining 90% will be the result of all summative assessments.  A cumulative final exam will reflect the learning goals of the entire semester and will be worth the remaining 20% of the semester grade.

    Grading Scale

    A: 90%-100%        B: 80%-89%        C:70%-79%           D: 60%-69%          F: 0%-59%

    5.     To give Algebra 1 your complete attention by storing your cell phone.

    We gladly accept your classroom donations. Supplies we use regularly are tissues, hand sanitizer, and dry erase markers.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

    Resources: Homework assignments and classroom resources including lessons will be posted on Canvas.  Please use these resources to stay caught up in the event of an absence.  The textbook for this class is McGraw-Hill Algebra 1.  There is a classroom set to remain in the classroom, and each student will be able to check out one textbook from the bookstore to keep at home. 


    Cell Phone / Behavior Policy:    Respect for teachers, students, the learning process, and our campus is expected at all times. Cell phones are not allowed in class. When you enter class, you are expected to place your cell phone in your assigned cell phone slot. If a phone is out at non-justified time by the instructor, the instructor will take the cell phone to the front office.

    All school rules outlined in the student handbook as they pertain to electronics, dress code, food and drink, language, and behavior will be strongly enforced in this class.  Students who do not adhere to the school rules, classroom expectations or interrupt the educational process will first be given a verbal warning, then be assigned after school detention, and finally receive a referral to administration.


    Late Work Policy:

    All late work will be accepted until the chapter test for 50% credit.  After the chapter test, homework assignments for that chapter will no longer be accepted.

    Test Retake Policy:

    Students will be allowed to retake two tests per semester.  In order to be eligible to retake a test, students must complete test corrections/unit review and attend a minimum of two tutoring sessions with their teacher.  Teacher discretion will be exercised in determining how many tutoring sessions are necessary prior to administering a test retake.

    Tardy Policy: If you are tardy to class, your entrance is disruptive to the learning process, and you miss information necessary for your success. On the second tardy, parents will be notified. On the 3rd tardy, students will be given after school detention.  On the 4th tardy, a referral will be written and submitted to the office (per school policy).  Students who are more than 10 minutes tardy will be marked absent.

    District Policies

    Absences:   A student will be considered absent from class if they enter the classroom more than ten minutes after the designated start time.  The accumulation of excused and unexcused absences will result in potential consequences. ALL absences accrue towards the limit of 10 per semester. HUSD has implemented a limit of ten absences per semester. If the student acquires ten or more absences during the semester, the student will lose credit in those classes. To earn credit while auditing a class, the student must submit an appeal to administration, attend all classes and complete all assignments after the appeal is presented, and pass the semester final exam with a minimum of 75%. Subsequent appeals can be appealed to the School Board.

    Diversity: All individuals have a right to an educational environment free from bias, prejudice and bigotry. As members of the Higley High School educational community, students are expected to refrain from participating in acts of harassment that are designed to demean another student’s race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, disability or sexual orientation.

    Communication: Grades are available through Synergy.  All lessons, class notes, resources and homework assignments will be posted on my Canvas page. Students who are absent should use resources on the page to stay caught up with the class.


    Office Hours:  My office hours are after school every day except Tuesday from 2:30-3:30.

    Please let me know if you are coming in after school so I can advise you of any conflicts.  Office hours are subject to change based on faculty meetings, parent meetings, or personal obligations.
