    1. Course Description: This course is designed to dive further into the curriculum of English 10. Students will have the opportunity to extend reading and grammar skills and build upon the skills learned in previous years. Please note this is NOT a homework class. If the student requires math support, please see your counselor. This change of class is a privilege if the student is not remaining in the desired classroom, consequences may apply.

     

    1. Grading Policy:

     

    • Grade categories are:
    • Coming to class prepared and on time
    • Class participation in discussions
    • Small group and individual projects
    • Interactive notebook input and output
    • Semester grades will be rounded up to a higher letter grade only in the case that the final percentage is within .5% of higher letter grade.
    • At least two grades a week will be entered.
    • Parents and students can check grades online through ParentVue/Student Vue.

     

    • School Absence / Tardy Policy:

     

     Definition: An absence is defined as a student's non-attendance in the student's assigned classroom during an assigned period. A student is considered absent from class if they enter the classroom more than 10 minutes after the bell, or if they never come.  The difference between an excused absence and an unexcused absence is parents have followed procedures to excuse a student by calling the attendance line.  This is a not a new attendance policy as written by administration:

      A student will be considered absent from class if they enter the classroom more than ten minutes after the designated start time.  If the student has a valid reason to be late to class it will be an excused absence. The absence will be considered unexcused if the student is late without being excused by the school administration or the parent signing in the child late.  If you would like to receive attendance updates throughout the day, you have the option to sign up in ParentVUE.

     

    • Tardy policy will be enforced. Having “checked in” or dropped off a backpack in the classroom does not mean the student is on time for class. Students who are not in the classroom when the bell rings will be marked tardy.
    • The tardy policy is as follows 1st Tardy = Student Conference, 2nd Tardy = Student Conference + Parent Phone Call + Warning that 3rd tardy is ASD, 3rd Tardy = ASD, 4th + Tardy = Office Referral
    • Students will have as many days to make up work as were missed. In case of extended absence, alternative arrangements may be made with the teacher.
    • It is the student’s responsibility to find out what he or she missed due to absences and to make arrangements to make up the work. Resources for finding out what was missed include information written on the board, other students, and the teacher by email or in person.
    • Projects due on the date of an absence are still due, even if the student is absent from class. Make-up time does not apply to work assigned prior to the absence. Arrangements should be made to ensure the work is submitted on time. Consideration may be given for extenuating circumstances. (Extenuating circumstances do not include running out of printer ink, suddenly discovering a faulty printer, having computer issues, the Internet going down at your home, staying up until two in the morning only to have your computer crash, etc.).

     

     

    Classroom Environment:

    In support of Higley’s academic environment policies and to be respectful of our class, please refrain from:

    • Food or drink in the classroom; this includes gum and candy. Only water is allowed.  This helps keep things neat and clean.  I appreciate it!
    • Wearing hats in the classroom. It really is a matter of respect. 
    • Using cell phones or other technology in class without permission. There will be times when technology is used for academic purposes.  I will let you know those times and the rules and boundaries for such use.  If phones are used during class without permission, it will be sent to the office.  Upon the first offense, students may pick up phones right after school.  After that, office policies will apply.

     

    Classroom Time:

    Students are expected to be in class during the entire class period except in case of an emergency. Students who need to leave to see the nurse, counselor, etc…must ask for and receive permission before they leave, via a pass from the teacher. Students who need to use the restroom must sign in and out on the restroom log and can only use the restroom in the 400 building. Students will be given 4 passes per quarter to use for leaving the classroom. Per administration, students are not allowed to leave in the first or last ten minutes of the class period. Disciplinary action will be taken for students who abuse their time out of the classroom.

     

    Diversity:

    All individuals have a right to an educational environment free from bias, prejudice and bigotry. As members of the Higley High School educational community, students are expected to refrain from participating in acts of harassment that are designed to demean another student’s race, gender, ethnicity, religious preference, disability or sexual orientation.

     

    Consequences / Disciplinary Action:

    In the case of a behavioral or academic concern, the following steps will be taken:

    1. Conference with student (possible parent communication)
    2. Parent communication
    3. Assign After-School Detention with the teacher
    4. Parent conference (may involve counselor/administrator)
    5. Referral to administration, Saturday School

    Procedures:

    BEFORE CLASS:

    • Use the bathroom
    • Put away cell phones and earbuds

    Upon entering class, students are expected to:

    • Sit in assigned seat
    • Review the daily objective and agenda
    • Complete the warm-up

    DURING CLASS:

    • Listen carefully to instructions given by the teacher
    • Ask questions if you do not understand something once you’ve gotten started or asked your peer group for clarification
    • Focus on using class time wisely; be positive and productive and this will be a great class!

    AFTER CLASS:

    ·       Complete your Cool Down when signaled by me. Remain in your seat until the bell rings.

     Pen or pencil
    Highlighters
    (One) 3-hole punched pencil case/pouch

    Please print student / parent names and sign where indicated.  This can then be handed to me at the beginning of class.
