General leave can be used to take time off work due to your own illness, or to care for an immediate family member who is ill, for doctor’s appointments, or for other personal appointments that cannot be handled outside the school day.
Per Policy (G-2550 GCCA: Professional/ Support Staff General Leave) Family is defined as spouse, grandparents, children, grandchildren, parents, like relations created by marriage (e.g., stepchild, father-in-law, etc.), and siblings.
There are certain days when general leave cannot be used – these are designated as “Blackout Days”. Click here for the Blackout calendar. Absences on these dates will require documentation if you want to use your general leave. Otherwise, the time off will be without pay.
General leave cannot be used for more than three (3) consecutive work days without documentation for the leave. If you need to be off work for an extended period of time due to serious illness or surgery, or to care for a family member with a serious illness or who is having surgery, please see Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave below. In order to change your name, you must provide a copy of your driver’s license reflecting the new name, and a copy of your Social Security card reflecting your new name to Human Resources. Without this documentation, your name cannot be changed in the Human Resources database.All Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) eligible employees (work more than 5 hours per day) must update their name with ASRS by visiting their website, www.azasrs.gov and completing a Change of Name Form.You must complete an “Employee Leave Request” form, click here for the form, and provide documentation of the death (obituary, funeral program, copy of death certificate, etc.). An employee may be granted, up to five (5) days of leave, with pay per year to be used in the event of death in the employee's family. FMLA is a federal entitlement which guarantees 12 weeks of leave from work for your own serious medical condition or if you are needed to care for a family member with a serious medical condition. FMLA also provides job protection. For further information see the FMLA guide on the Benefits page.
If you have a serious illness or need surgery which will require an absence of more than 5 days from work, you should request an FMLA leave. If you know about the need for the absence prior to start of the absence, please contact Isabel Herrera in Benefits as soon as possible. She will be able to assist you with the process and forms. FMLA has specific eligibility requirements so not all employees will be eligible for FMLA. An employee who is not eligible for FMLA can apply for a leave of absence.Top
The approval or denial of a leave of absence is strictly at the discretion of the Superintendent and the Governing Board. A leave of absence does not provide job protection, meaning that the District does not have to hold your job for you until you return from your leave. The District may elect to fill your position on a permanent basis in your absence. Top
