• Syllabus for Spanish 1 and 2

    Course Description:  The objective of this class is to help master basic communication skills in Spanish.  We will engage in Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing activities in order to gain proficiency in Spanish.  We will complete tasks and projects that help you build skills to communicate in a variety of real-life contexts.  In addition, we will be exploring the cultural aspects of many of the Spanish speaking countries.


    If you are absent, you are responsible for all work and content missed. Refer to Canvas for information. Any work due the day you are absent must be turned in the day you return or it is considered late. Anything assigned the day you were absent gives you a day extension. See your teacher for specific due dates the day you return.


    If you come to class late, you miss any activities or time lost. There are no extensions for tardies. We will follow school policy regarding consequences. There are penalties if you are tardy more than twice. 


    The following will be the grading scale used:

    • 90+% = A
    • 80-89% = B
    • 70-79% = C
    • 60-69% = D
    • <60% = F

    Grades will use the following category weights:

    60% Assessments (quizzes, tests, exams, presentations, skits, etc. – anything graded to measure your proficiency in any skill)

    20% Practice and participation (homework, classwork, bellwork, participation points, etc – points given for anything practice related)

    20% Finals (Final exam, writing final, speaking final, project)

    You will not be able to track grades in Canvas. You must use StudentVue/ParentVue to do that. Canvas will be used for assignments, notes and speaking tests.

    Retaking tests and other assessments:

    Retakes will be allowed. To retake a test, you must do so before the end of the following unit (for example, Unit 1 retakes must be done before the end of Unit 2). You must complete a review assignment given by your teacher. You must make arrangements with your teacher during his or her office hours. You will receive the average score of the original test and the retake. If you are absent the day of a test, you must make arrangements THE DAY YOU RETURN to make it up. If not made up by the end of the new unit, you cannot make it up and it will remain a zero in the gradebook.

    For other assessments like projects and presentations, you may also redo them for the average of the two grades. You must make arrangements with the teacher as to what requirements there are before you retake it. It must be redone by the end of the current unit or a deadline the teacher gives you beyond that.

    Late work:

    Work assigned during an instructional unit will only be accepted during that unit. Homework and practice assignments must be completed with adequate effort before it is due for full credit. If not adequately completed by due date, it will be worth half credit once completed until the end of the unit, after which it will not be accepted.

    Some assessments like presentations, skits, at-home speaking tests work a little differently. If they are late, they will receive an initial 20% penalty and an additional 10% penalty each day it is late thereafter, with a maximum penalty of 50%. In the case of absence, you must make arrangements with your teacher THE DAY YOU RETURN for deadlines.

    Spanish speaking points: Many days in class we will have activities that involve Spanish interaction, either writing or speaking with a partner, using ONLY SPANISH. You can get 10 “Spanish points” those days. Speaking English FOR ANY REASON will cause you to lose 5 points each time you do so. It is purely effort. You speak and practice Spanish, you get your points. 

    Food and drink: No food or drink (excluding water in a water bottle) is allowed in the classroom. It must be thrown away upon entry in the classroom. No chewing gum is allowed in the classroom.

    Leaving class: The expectation is that you take care of personal business on personal time (bathroom and such). You should take advantage of passing periods and lunch time for that. You may not leave during the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of class. You may not leave during instruction or paired or group practice – only during individual work time. You must sign out and take the pass.

    Electronic devices: They must be kept in your bag/backpack (which must be kept on the floor) unless they are being utilized for instructional purposes as permitted by the teacher. Devices will be confiscated and turned in to the office if they are used in class. They may be retrieved at the office at the end of the day. Penalties and consequences will result according to school policy.

    Class Behavior: These are the rules of class:

    • Use Spanish in class

    No one has ever learned Spanish by speaking English. Don’t expect the teacher to use English. Use visual cues and listen. Spanish is the standard, regardless the level. I will say this a million times this year – two-year old Mexican kids can learn Spanish. That means you can too.

    • Always show respect

    Does this need explaining? Treat everyone and everything with respect and there will never be any problems. Do not write on or damage school property. Do not take or bother things that are not yours unless you have been given permission from the owner to do so. Be nice. Be nice. Be nice. If what you wish to say or do is going to be unkind or done in an unkind manner, simply do not do it. Kindly encourage all to do the same.  Profanity will not be tolerated.

    • Always be honest

    This is common sense. Don’t lie, don’t cheat. It is wrong and it can lead to school issues. If you are suspected of academic dishonesty, you will simply be asked to retake the assessment. If you are caught using an electronic device for any reason during an assessment, you will receive a zero, but you may retake it as you would under normal retaking procedures and it will be recorded with administration. If the evidence is clear there was cheating, all parties involved will receive a zero with no chance of retaking it.

    • Always come to class prepared and always work hard

    If you do this, you will succeed. Don’t waste your time or your education. When you are in class, your presence tells me you are there to learn. I expect full participation in all activities all the time. You may not sleep, read a book or work on work from other classes unless you are done with the activity of the moment AND completely caught up in the class. You are expected to work from the start of class until the bell. Do not pack up early. Do not leave your seat until excused.

    • Always be responsible for your learning and performance

    In the end, I will do all I can to help, but I can’t do it for you. I can’t make the learning happen. If you are having difficulties, come see me. Your grade will, if you want it to be, reflect your understanding and ability to produce in Spanish.

    At-home tips for student success:

    1. Check parent portal periodically to keep up with your student and teacher page calendar to see what is being done daily.
    2. Look at your student’s homework calendar to see if he/she has signatures that indicate homework is being completed.
    3. Keep up with Canvas for instructional activities and assignments.
    4. Discuss concerns with your student and contact me for any reason. (email preferred)
    5. Make sure the student has daily, dedicated study and homework time.

    Online Synergy gradebook:

    Parents can access their child’s grades and assignments by going to the school’s website and clicking on ParentVue/StudentVue on the quick links bar (right side of the page).  Teachers may include digital documents, classroom assignments, points and percentages, and individual feedback and comments. Students’ information is only accessible by using an individualized password assigned by the school.  Parents may contact office personnel/counselor for their child’s password at 480-279-8000.
