Mrs. Deskins’ First Grade Classroom Procedures
Drop off and pick up
Students may be dropped off any time after 7:45am and picked up in the line at 3:05pm. The playground supervision does not begin until 7:45am. When the bell rings to line up, the kiddos will line up in line #1 by the gates. When picking your child up from school, I will be standing with them awaiting your arrival in front of the gym. When your child sees you, they will need to give me a high five before leaving. This ensures me that the students will remain safe.
Homework/Behavior Folder
The black folder is for parents and the teacher to communicate as well as for students to take papers, homework, important notices and other notes to and from school. This folder should be checked every day and their behavior calendar signed. It is a great way for children to become organized and responsible. They are responsible for putting their number in at the end of the day.
Homework
You should expect that your child will have some type of homework most every week. You will always find the homework assignments in their homework folder. It will go home every Friday and be due on Friday. I encourage you to set up with your child a scheduled time for homework each day. Students should be able to do most assignments independently, but feel free to help if they ask you. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work.
Snack
All students may bring a nutritious snack and a bottle of water to school every day. Please do not send water bottles that have twist-off caps. Please also give me a heads up at least a day ahead of time if your child is planning to bring a treat for his or her birthday.
Lunch Procedures
Lunch is from 12:17 – 12:47 in the cafeteria. Students have a choice of bringing in their own lunch or ordering from the school menu. Please identify all payments with your child’s name and student id number. Lunch money will be taken up to the office first thing in the morning. Menus can be found on the district web page.
Marvelous Monkey of the Week
The marvelous monkey of the week is the special person focused on each week. This is a wonderful opportunity for the class and the teacher to get to know each other better. The student will be able to fill out a poster with fun information, share pictures, interests and hobbies with the class. They will also have the opportunity to bring in their favorite toy or animal, read their favorite book to the class, and teach the class how to do something. Instructions will be sent home with the poster. You will be notified the week prior when your child will be selected to be the special student.
Parent Communication
The black homework folder, website, telephone calls, notes back and forth, and email are all forms of communication to keep you updated on what is happening at school with your child. My teacher page(website) is a great source of information as well. Email or notes are the easiest ways to communicate with me, but, if needed, feel free to call my classroom voicemail and leave me a message. I will always return messages as promptly as possible. I look at my email at lunch and try to look at my email again towards the end of the day, but first grade is very busy. If there is an important message like a change in how your child may be getting home, please notify the office and they can call me on the loud speaker. My email address is shannon.deskins@husd.org and my voicemail is 480-279-7889.
Specials
Students will have Music, PE, Art, Library and Computers on a weekly rotation. Students are being asked to wear tennis shoes for PE. Usually those wearing flip flips or sandals are not allowed to participate for their own safety.
Parent Volunteers
Parent volunteers are welcome in the classroom after the first month of school. These weeks allow time to establish routines, expected behaviors, and a daily schedule. Please be sure to let me know if you are interested in volunteering. There will be a schedule for parents to sign-up if you choose to volunteer. Our reading groups will be from 9:15 - 10:40 Tuesday through Thursday. The students love to have someone help them with games and activities in the hall during this time.
