  • Dangers of Snapchat: HUSD Community Lecture

    Dear HUSD community,

On August 25, Higley Unified School District is hosting a community lecture to help parents and guardians better understand the dangers of Snapchat and precautionary measures that can help keep their child safe. Snapchat has become one of the most popular apps among the youth with fun features like filters, emojis, augmented reality, but experts have concerns about the safety of this app.

Join us as we discuss these concerns and steps that can be taken to better keep kids safe. The event will take place Thursday, August 25 from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the Governing Board Room at the District Office: 2935 S Recker Road Gilbert, AZ 85295.

Please note that this event is intended for parents, guardians and other caregivers.

This event is part of our Healthy Higley Wellness Initiative. HUSD is partnering with community agencies to provide parents with resources around the topics of drug prevention and internet safety.

  • Dual Enrollment Opportunities

In conjunction with Chandler Gilbert Community College, Higley Virtual Academy is exploring its option to offer a handful of courses for Dual Enrollment.  Dual Enrollment provides students the opportunity of earning lower-division college credit while still enrolled in high school.  The credits students earn through dual enrollment are treated the same as regular college credit, i.e. they can be transferred to other Maricopa Community Colleges, Arizona’s state universities, and even some out-of-state colleges. Students will be establishing a college academic record and will be required to report such enrollment to future colleges or universities.

Those interested will find more peer interaction than our typical classes online.  To put it in perspective, students can come to expect approximately 25% of their coursework to involve collaboration.

    • Collaborative Activities- students will be assigned partners who are also online to meet with virtually or in person to work together on assigned projects
    • Discussion Boards- posting and replying to these is a non-negotiable

Participation cost  reflects $85.00 per credit hour- classes average between 3 and 4 credits.

At this time, we are exploring the following potential offerings: Honors and on-level Pre-calculus, English 101 and 102 (Junior and Senior English) and American/AZ History.

In the event you are interested in exploring this pathway, we ask that you reach out via phone or email so we can provide you with additional information to make a sound decision.
