Thank you for your support
It is with sincere gratitude that the Higley Unified School District extends thanks to the community for supporting the Maintenance and Operations Override during Tuesday’s election. With the outcome of Tuesday’s vote, the district will be able to bring $8.1 million back into the budget for the next five years. This will avoid the need for $1.8 million additional reductions at this time.
“The Higley community is incredibly supportive of our schools, including parent and community volunteers in the classroom, fundraising efforts, attendance at student events and athletics,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Thomason said. “This vote is another way the people of the community have gathered around students, teachers, staff and schools.”
When the Higley Unified School District governing board put the 15% maintenance and operations override on the ballot, members identified priority areas for the funding during the first year, including:
• Increasing teacher compensation for retention and recruitment;
• Maintaining and improving elementary specials such as arts, music and
physical education, and district athletics and arts;
• Providing staffing to reduce average class sizes;
• Supporting gifted, special education and all-day kindergarten;
• Providing education resources to classrooms.
Budget discussions for 2016-17 will get under way in the next few weeks. The public is welcome to attend any work study session or general governing board meeting to be a part of those talks.
Higley Unified School District is a 12,000-student district serving students in preschool through high school from Gilbert and Queen Creek.
AZ Merit Update
In Spring 2015, Higley Unified School District and schools across Arizona administered the first AzMERIT assessments. These assessments were designed to cover language arts and math.
Over the next few months, districts, schools and parents will receive results. Several different reports are available to help families understand the results. The district has put together an AzMERIT Parent Resource page to provide additional information.
