Chaparral students and teachers welcome the arrival of the first of two mobile laptop labs, or C.O.W.S. (Computers On Wheels) as they are affectionately called. These mobile computer labs consist of 20 laptops each, and provide wireless Internet access throughout the Chaparral campus.

As an extension of the short essay “Homeless” by Anna Quindlen, students in Melody Griffith’s seventh grade language arts classes recently used the laptops to investigate the issue of homelessness in America. Students wrote an expository essay using research-based facts, causes, and efforts being made to end homelessness.

The new laptops have generated renewed enthusiasm for learning as they provide an additional way to infuse technology into the curriculum and directly engage students in the learning process. Students recognize and appreciate the school district’s investment in technology tools that will help to prepare them for their future.

Students enjoy being able to use the laptops in their classroom instead of traveling back and forth to the computer lab. They also like being able to work at their desks in groups, and moving around to see the SMART board.
