San Tan Readers
Who says 7th graders don’t read anymore? Miss Dayna’s seventh grade class has read a total of 1402 books this semester, 595 first quarter and 807 second quarter; an average of 17.75 books per student. Last year’s 7th grade class read 1086 books in the same time period and had 21 more students than this year’s 7th grade.
San Tan’s 7th grade has been using Nanci Atwell’s reading program for 2½ years and has seen reading increase from 702 books (2007-2008) to 2681 (2008-2009) to 1402 so far this school year. This quarter’s star readers were Elyce Russell with a total of 48 books, and Joel Skolrud with a total of 34 books. 34 students read a total of 10 books or more in the second quarter; this means almost half the 7th grade is in double digits for the quarter.
Here’s what some San Tan students say about the 7th grade reading program. “I like this program because we can read books that interest us and are at our individual reading levels,” says Suriya Ensign. “I like being able to check out the books I want to read,” she added. Ryan Martin says, “I didn’t really like reading before, but now I do. I can choose my own books and that makes reading fun.” Nick Self had this to say, “I like the choice of books we have and it has made me want to read more.”
“Allowing students to choose the books they read the way we do as adults makes a huge difference in the way they approach reading,” Miss Dayna says. “I am very proud of my students and what they have achieved so far this year.”
