Mr. Wyatt’s 6th grade students at San Tan Elementary are studying the relationships between structures and functions of organisms (plants). Students worked in groups to break down plants from a whole into its many parts, from the organism to the cell. Students started by brainstorming a circle map about the different systems and organs they knew about in plants.

Next, they defined how the systems all work together to feed and nourish the plant. Each group was assigned a specific part of a plant, non-vascular, seed, root, stem, leaf, and flower to study and map. After each group created a thinking map about their part the class worked together to create one of three wall size thinking maps showing plants from the whole to their parts.
