Read Across America Week Returns to Chaparral
Each year, the National Education Association (NEA) sponsors Read Across America Week to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and his many, outstanding contributions to literacy. This year, the celebration will be held from March 1-5. Chaparral Elementary School is ready to join thousands of schools across the nation in this annual event.
What’s in store for the Chaparral school community? Our Literacy Committee has compiled a list of exciting activities, including:
Official proclamation by Mr. Hancock, Fourth Grade Teacher
Guest Readers in classrooms- Wednesday, March 3rd
Cat in the Hat Read Alouds- Wednesday, March 3rd (grades K-2 only)
A Week of School Spirit
Door Decorating and Bookmark Contests
Dr. Seuss pencil and hat sales
Our Second Annual Literacy Night- Red, White, and READ Night- will be held on Wednesday, March 3rd, from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. Take a walk back to school with your family and participate in teacher-directed reading activities for students of all ages.
The festivities include:
Second Grade will present a variety of “Seussical songs” at 5:45 p.m. in the Gym.
Kindergarten Roundup will begin at 6:30 p.m. - also in the Gym.
Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth grade will host another popular Poetry Night in the LRC from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Students will present their
favorite poems and/or personally-written work. Please come and support our Shark writers as they share their love for poetry.
The musical Dutton Family will perform several selections in the cafeteria, beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Dr. Seuss pencils (with eraser tops) will be available in Second Grade classrooms for $1.00 each. Dr. Seuss hats will be available in the LRC for $5.00 each. All sales will benefit purchase of additional literature circle books for our school.
